After spending countless hours perfecting your site, it’s important to know just how well it’s performing. And it’s not enough to simply know how many visitors you have each day; other crucial stats include referring URLs, site overlay, bounce rate and content popularity. Viewing this data helps you optimize your site and get the most from your investment.

While tracking the performance of your site may sound like a complex procedure, most site analyzing tools are simple to use. After you insert a simple piece of code into your site or blog, the tool provides real-time tracking and reports. Some tracking services charge fees, but there are also plenty of free services like Google Analytics and StatCounter. It is generally recommended that you start with a free tool so that you can learn how to use the data before investing in more advanced tools.

Here are four stats in particular that will help you gauge the popularity of your site:

  1. Bounce rate: allows you to track how many people “bounce” away from you site within a matter of seconds. If people aren’t staying on your page very long, they’re obviously not engaging with its content. Monitoring the bounce rate helps you optimize your pages so that they entice visitors stay for longer than just a few seconds.
  2. Content popularity: reveals which pages of your site are the most popular. It can be interesting to see which content visitors are engaging with. Use this data to make your most popular pages more prominent and implement their attributes into other pages.
  3. Referring URLs: indentifies which websites are directing the most traffic to your site. This is helpful because by segmenting the information, you can see which URLs supply the most converting traffic. You can then establish stronger connections with these lucrative sites and improve the numbers even more.
  4. Site overlay: this stat shows your website in the same way it appears to users and allows you to track how many people click each link. Once you have identified the most effective links, position them more prominently in your site and also try to replicate their successful components in other parts of your site.
